Sunshine Coast Museum and Archives Regional Heritage Strategic Plan

Interim Report
Final Report

In May of 2002 the Sunshine Coast Maritime Museum and the Elphinstone Pioneer Museum amalgamated to form the Sunshine Coast Museum and Archives (SCMA). During the planning for the amalgamation, a business plan was developed that described some of the objectives and directions of the reborn museum.

Among the strategic directions identified by the business plan were effective leadership and effective marketing, communications and awareness building. The museum saw the need to explore its place in the Sunshine Coast as a region, and to identify regional resources it could draw on to interpret and understand the Culture and History of the coast.

In October of 2002, with a grant from the Museums Assistance Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage, the SCMA began the creation of its Regional Heritage Strategic Plan. The plan requires first of all mapping the cultural heritage resources of the Sunshine Coast, then actively choosing the direction of the museum and the partners it will need on the trip.

Creation of the plan will be facilitated by Cliff Quinn of fishAbility Services Inc.

The Schedule

Phase 1 - Information Collection (November-December 2002)

Research to discover and catalogue the resources of the coast will be necessary to provide the information for decisions regarding management of the region's heritage. A combination of web-based data collection, phone interviews and personal interviews will provide the raw material for this plan. The material will be available as it is collected at http://fishability.biz/SCHeritage .

Phase 2 - Public Input (January 2003)

Three meetings have been held to collect information for and provide direction to this project:

  • On Wednesday, January 8, 2003, the major heritage organizations on the coast met in Sechelt at 1:30 pm to introduce all participants, to establish individual goals and mandates, and to determine areas of common interest.
  • On Thursday, January 23, 2003, a public meeting was held in Sechelt at 7:00 pm at the Sechelt Public Library to solicit input to the project, including directions for regional heritage and resources that may not already be included in the knowledge base.
  • On January 24, 2003, a public meeting was held in Gibsons at the Kin Hut, Dougall Park echoing the processes for the Sechelt meeting.

Phase 3 - Reporting Back (February 2003)

An Interim Report was completed to provide feedback to stakeholder, but specifically to fulfill the obligations of the contract with Canadian Heritage.

The Final Report will be complete and delivered to the Sunshine Coast Museum and Archives by the end of February. The report will describe the heritage resources of the coast in detail, and will define objectives for the stewardship of these resources, and their use to the best beenfit of the community. These objectives will be served by supporting activities that can be measured to determine how well heritage is being served.
