The Vision for the Sunshine Coast Museum and Archives

The Vision statement reflects the key messages of the Boards as well as community input gathered on January 29th, 2002.

With a renewed commitment to the preservation and promotion of our history, the Elphinstone Pioneer Museum Society and the Sunshine Coast Maritime History Society will join together as one Museum and amalgamate their collections to become one of the finest regional museums in British Columbia. The new Sunshine Coast Museum and Archives will reflect the Sunshine Coast’s natural connection between land, sea and human experiences. By encouraging curiosity and sharing information, it will build a deep and vital relationship with the community as well as provide visitors with exciting new perspectives of life on the Sunshine Coast.

A renewed commitment to education, public involvement and research will emphasize accessibility and availability. Improved conditions for exhibition and preservation of our heritage collections will increase our capacity to reach new audiences. It will be a dynamic place to visit and research. The visitor will enjoy the process of learning through community-based programs that are consistently updated and renewed, as well as curriculum-based programs that meet the needs of our schools. We will also be able to make collections available to new audiences through innovative technologies.

A renewed commitment to collaboration with allied organizations and exploring partnerships within the community will encourage public involvement. An exhibit space devoted to travelling exhibits, theme displays and seasonal events will establish the Museum as a community asset, attract return visits and create a centre of attention.

The physical space presented by the Sunshine Coast Museum and Archives will reflect the ambiance and character of the Sunshine Coast. It will become a landmark within the community and a destination for visitors. The unique design, use of space and connectivity with the waterfront will reflect the ever-present interface between land and sea for the culture, history and economy of the Sunshine Coast. An heritage garden greets the visitor and well marked pathways lead to water-based exhibits and activities.

The Mission of the Sunshine Coast Museum and Archives

The Sunshine Coast Museum and Archives is committed to preserving, promoting and presenting the vibrant and diverse history of the Sunshine Coast by preserving artefacts of historical relevance to the Sunshine Coast; by offering stimulating exhibits and providing dynamic educational programs; by providing a resource centre and archives; and by making collections accessible and available. Our guiding principles are to inspire curiosity, involve our community and share our story.
